Location of downlights for second fix.

Have you ever drilled a hole for a low voltage downlight and hit (or been too close to) a ceiling joist, or come under a soldier beam, water pipe or some other obstruction? Scott Pearson from Millswood SA has a suggestion.

At the first fix stage it is easy to locate these obstacles, then using a plumb bob, plan your lighting layout on the floor. By using a tin of 'spray and mark' paint, gaffer tape or some other temporary marking system, mark your light positions on the floor, making sure that directly above your mark is a suitable location for a downlight away from timbers or other fire hazards.

Then after the plasterboard is fitted, all you have to do is drop the plumb bob onto your mark, mark the corresponding position on the plasterboard and you can then drill through the ceiling, confident you are in the correct location. If the surface socket and transformer has been located near the hole, simply snap in the light fitting and away you go.

Nice one Scott, you have just picked up a cheque for $250, courtesy of The Olex Cable Guy
