Here's an improvement on the use of a piece of split storm water pipe to protect cables as you drag them through masonry walls.

Garry and Cokes from B&K Lewis Electrical have found that if you cut a quarter out of a small plastic cable drum and jam this over the wall, it protects the cable both from the bottom of the hole and catching on the side.
